Columbia Heights is bounded by Florida Avenue to the south, Spring Road to the north, Georgia Avenue to the east and 16th Street to the west. What a terrific piece of Washington, DC real estate! It was originally known for being farmland. In 1881, Senator John Sherman purchased lots of land in the area and named the development Columbia Heights, in honor of Columbian College. The development made Columbia Heights one of the most desirable neighborhoods in the city, and attracted notable residents. In 1914, four streetcar lines were put into place connecting Columbia Heights to downtown DC, which started transforming this neighborhood from suburban to more urban. Riots in 1968 led to a decline in residents in this area, but since the opening of the Columbia Heights Metro station in 1999, this neighborhood has been on the rise with a new influx of residents and developments.

Columbia Heights is served by the Columbia Heights Metro stop on the yellow and green lines. It makes it easy for people to come and go from the area, and has helped this neighborhood grow.
